Things being said about Jesus is NOT my boyfriend and I will not sing to Him as if He is.

    or something like that!

Crikey, Paul! Are you and Jesus going through a rough patch?

I’m going to take the opportunity here to unpack what I get out of that quote in what is probably an all-too-earnest way.

    1. I don’t know much about Bill Kinnnon. I grabbed the quote from a comment on this post on Tall Skinny Kiwi.
    2. I quite like worshipping God through music. I play drums in our church’s worship band.
    3. There are a number of worship songs about that seem to think that every Christian is a little bride of Jesus and the goal is to get up to as much as possible with him before the big wedding day where Jesus marries each of us. In fact, the CHURCH as a whole is the bride (singular and in a spiritual sense) of Christ.
    4. As a heterosexual male, I find these songs a bit creepy. I think if I was homosexual I still would. There is so much more to a personal relationship with God than Jesus as the big spiritual hunk that we all drool over.
    5. No, I don’t have intimacy issues, nor am I secretly questioning my sexuality, but thanks for asking.
    6. My current least favourite worship quote is from Mark Driscoll. It’s something like: I can’t worship a guy that I can beat up. It’s the straight male version of singing to Jesus like he’s your boyfriend.
    7. Nos. 1-6 are why Bill Kinnon’s quote made made me laugh and I liked it. It’s not so funny anymore now that I’ve explained it, is it?
    8. I told you this would be too earnest.
