Worship Music to Make Ears Happy

Worshiping God is an essential part of my life. I like to worship God along with live music. I love playing drums in my church’s worship band. But recorded worship music – I’d rather listen to nothing, or my vacuum cleaner.
I can’t stand the poor production values, the bad Keane and Coldplay ripoffs, the fact that worship albums are still coming out trying to be U2’s Joshua Tree.
I do like some recorded worship music: Yahweh by U2, Restore My Soul by The Choir, the first five songs on The Violet Burning’s Strength album. Interesting that none of these are actually on worship albums.
I realise that, except for the bad production values, this is a matter of subjective taste. I also realise that my tastes may be in the minority. (Apparently several people thought the wastes of space known as the Lord of the Rings films were quite good.)
I write all that in order to say this: My friend Tim Rowlands and his band MTK have just released a new worship album called Walk These Fields, and it is really good. It is actually enjoyable to listen to, the main reason being that it doesn’t sound like a worship album.
Full disclosure: I did the CD artwork and Christine did the photos. But do not think I am biased; I have designed material for plenty of stuff in my time that I had no intention of ever using. I listen to this album because I like it.

Pop over to their MySpace page and have a listen. Highlights for me: Breathe is probably the most summer we’ll get in the UK this year. You Took Me In seems to pound you closer to God. God of All has an incredible build. The Worship Prayer is brilliantly anthemic. There is a lot more great stuff too. Possibly best of all, the drummer, Tim’s brother Dan can do all kinds of stuff that I can’t.
Go on, buy it. Your ears deserve a treat.
